I took Alex to see The Incredibles this weekend. Unfortunately, Alex wasn't able to follow the story and asked to leave after 30 minutes. I put my most mature face on and agreed to leave with her, even though I was really enjoying the show.
Unlike its sibling Toy Story movies, the plot of TI is communicated through subtlety and indirection. Alex will probably enjoy it when we watch the DVD at home and can break down the story, pausing to explain where necessary. (Even in a matinee filled with kids, I can't bring myself to talk during the movie.)
I did try to get across one of the themes to Alex as we stood outside the theater, blinking in the sunlight. "Those guys were superheroes, and they used to do exciting, cool things all the time. But now they have jobs that aren't so interesting, and then they have to go home and take care of their kids. That's why grownups like this movie so much."
"Was that what you used to be like?"
"Uh, no, I wasn't a superhero."
This is the third movie I've had to walk on. I also missed the last 70 minutes of Shrek (2001) and Finding Nemo (2003).
