Dadblog

For my friends who have kids too, but especially for those who don't.

Goodbye to New Orleans

I visited New Orleans once, 15 years ago. Here are some of my pictures.

I've been thinking that if our nation lost Omaha to a catastrophe, we'd be very sad for the wretched Nebraskans standing among their devasted cornfields, but our national culture wouldn't be so much poorer as it is today.

I hope everyone will make a donation to Habitat for Humanity. I spent a summer (the year after the photos) working with them and saw that they can do a lot for poor folks without infantalizing them in the process. Families that received Habitat-built housing had to contribute a non-trivial number of hours to the construction of their homes.

Darfur

I was recently shamed by a satire that appeared in The Onion about shrugging off the humanitarian crisis in Darfur. I decided to make a donation to www.crisisgroup.org and also to suggest that dadblog readers check out this link to their site to learn more.
